Schools open up for the local community and volenteer work

School is not only a place for students where they go in the morning, learn from books and teachers and go home at the end of the school day. School has to open up for the community to offer students more learning experiences and give them the chance to experience that they can make the difference.

Local nonprofit organizations and clubs need young people for volunteer work. They have  social, environmental, political, sportive or religous backgrounds. So they can meet the individual interests of the students. But also the tasks students can be involved in are varying. They can assist in the club management, they can learn about planning procedures, organize events, make training plans or help with the training routine.  They have the chance to learn more about the issues of the organisations and value their contribution to society.

As a vocational college for business we have the chance and the duty to offer our students practical learning experiences. Our curricula allow to embed the practical experiences because they meet the learning targets of the different subjects. The following illustration can give an impression.

Comic about WEGE - social learning, transversal skills

In this Comic you learn about different social learning opportunities through the WEGE Project. These skills become more and more important because the students live in a world with an uncertain perspective. The world is changing so fast, that it is essential for them to adopt quickly. They also need resiliance to overcome setbacks and start new. Social skills are also called transversal skills to express their value and importance. In this project the students have the chance to try things out, get experiences and develop a higher self esteem.

#padlet is a very nice tool. You can use it to present group members to another group. Or students can present their results on a topic. So that everybody in class can see them. It is also very helpful to work together with international partners. So you can mix the teams that they work in international groups. This is an example made by Kevin Hodgeson. He presented it on flickr.

#Dotstorming is a tool to present ideas and everybody can vote for the best ideas, so you can prioritize the next steps.

With lino.it you can create digital pinboards.
